Tortula revolvens is a species of acrocarpous moss belonging to the family Pottiaceae. While not a conventional agricultural crop, it is a significant organism in ecological studies, often serving as a pioneer species in dry, barren, or rocky environments where biodiversity is limited.
The distribution of this species spans various temperate and Mediterranean climate zones. It is typically found in open, sun-exposed habitats such as calcareous rocky outcrops, sandy embankments, and thin soils. Its ability to thrive in harsh, nutrient-poor conditions allows it to establish colonies where larger plants fail.
Morphologically, Tortula revolvens forms small, dense tufts with a characteristic reddish-brown appearance. The leaves possess margins that recurve or revolve strongly, particularly when the plant is dehydrated, which is a key trait used for identification in field bryology.
