While modern taxonomy sometimes reclassifies it within the Heliotropium genus, it remains widely recognized in horticultural and ecological contexts under the name Tournefortia gnaphalodes.

The plant is native to the coastal regions of the Caribbean and Florida, where it dominates sandy dunes and seaside environments. Its evolutionary history is tied to maritime zones, which has equipped the plant with unique physiological mechanisms for surviving high salinity and high-wind environments that would be lethal to most standard crops.
