Pacific poison oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum) is a woody shrub or vine belonging to the Anacardiaceae family. In agricultural contexts, it is treated as a highly problematic invasive species rather than a crop, primarily due to the presence of urushiol oil, which causes severe contact dermatitis in humans and livestock.
The plant originates from the western regions of North America, stretching from British Columbia through the Pacific Coast and into Baja California. It thrives in diverse environments, ranging from coastal bluffs to deciduous forests and oak woodlands, demonstrating a high degree of ecological plasticity that allows it to dominate disturbed lands.
Botanically, it is recognized by its trifoliate leaves, which can vary significantly in appearance based on light availability and local climate. Depending on the environment, the plant can grow as a low-lying shrub in open sunlight or as a vigorous, climbing vine in shaded areas. Its root system is exceptionally robust, allowing it to compete effectively with native vegetation and crops.
