The plant is native to the western United States, with a distribution ranging from Washington and Oregon to California and eastward into the Great Basin region. It thrives in open, arid, and semi-arid environments, including shrublands, foothills, and dry grasslands. While it has no agricultural utility, it is a significant concern for range managers due to its rapid emergence in early spring.
