Trapa bicornis, commonly known as the Chinese water caltrop, is an annual aquatic plant belonging to the family Lythraceae. It is a highly specialized hydrophyte that thrives in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater environments, distinguished by its unique nut-like fruit featuring two prominent, horn-like protrusions.

The plant originates from East and Southeast Asia, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Its natural range spans various climates, provided there is access to nutrient-rich, muddy substrates and stable water levels. Unlike other aquatic crops, Trapa bicornis is specifically managed for its edible kernel, which is a staple in various traditional Asian cuisines.

Botanically, the plant develops a rosette of floating rhombic leaves, supported by inflated petioles filled with aerenchyma, which provides buoyancy. The primary roots anchor the plant into the lake or pond bed. Throughout the summer, the plant produces small white flowers that transition into heavy, sinking fruits once maturation begins.

Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions. Ideal sites are shallow ponds with high organic matter content in the soil. Farmers typically sow the nuts directly into the substrate in early spring. Key management practices include monitoring water depth and transparency, as excessive turbidity can inhibit the initial development of the young rosettes.

In terms of agricultural utility, the seeds are harvested for their high starch and protein content, often consumed boiled, roasted, or ground into flour. Common agronomic challenges include water-borne fungal pathogens that target the root systems and various aquatic insect larvae that feed on the leaf tissues.
