Alpine bulrush (lat. Trichophorum alpinum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is a highly specialized wetland species that functions as a structural component of peatlands, fens, and other water-saturated habitats across the Northern Hemisphere.
The plant originates from circumboreal regions and is widely distributed throughout cold temperate and subarctic zones. It typically occupies niche environments such as nutrient-poor bogs, spring-fed marshes, and wet meadows where constant moisture and acidity levels prevent the dominance of more competitive vascular plant species.
Botanically, Trichophorum alpinum is characterized by its slender, stiff stems and narrow leaves. Its most distinctive feature is the spikelet which, during the fruiting stage, produces elongated, silky white bristles. These bristles provide the plant with a striking, woolly appearance that is visually prominent during the summer season.
Cultivation requirements for this species are strict, as it requires a high water table and acidic to neutral soil conditions. In agricultural practice, it is not grown for biomass or fodder, but rather as a crucial element in environmental engineering projects and ecological restoration of degraded peatlands where site stability is required.
The practical application of this species is largely ecological:

Regarding health and protection, the species is generally resilient to standard agricultural pests and fungal pathogens. Drainage of peatlands and nitrogen deposition from surrounding intensive agriculture are the main threats that lead to the decline of alpine bulrush populations in the wild.
