The native distribution area is characterized by extreme climatic conditions, including short growing seasons, low temperatures, and prolonged snow cover. Trifolium alpinum is evolutionarily adapted to these harsh environments, possessing physiological mechanisms that allow it to thrive where other forage crops would fail.

Botanically, this clover is identified by its robust, often woody rhizome system that allows the plant to persist for many years.
