The species originates from Western and Southern Europe and is naturally distributed across the Mediterranean basin. It is highly adapted to temperate climates, showing a particular preference for well-drained, nutrient-poor coastal soils. Its presence is often an indicator of sandy substrates that may experience occasional salinity, to which this clover shows notable tolerance.
Botanically, it is recognized by its prostrate stems and small, trifoliate leaves. The most distinct feature is the inflorescence, which forms a shape resembling a bird's foot, from which the plant derives its scientific name. The primary agricultural utility is as a component of mixed pasture swards for grazing livestock, particularly sheep. While not a major commercial crop, its biological nitrogen-fixing ability enhances soil health. Potential threats include fungal diseases caused by excessive moisture and infestations of leaf-eating insects.
