Timothy clover

Timothy clover (Trifolium phleoides) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). This species is distinct within the Trifolium genus due to its unique spike-like inflorescences that closely resemble the panicles of timothy grass (Phleum pratense), which defines its common and scientific naming context.

The plant originates from the regions of Southern and Central Europe and parts of Western Asia. It typically thrives in dry meadows, rocky grasslands, and steppe-like environments. Due to its evolutionary adaptation to drier habitats, it is highly valued for its ability to maintain productivity in conditions where other more sensitive forage legumes might struggle.

From a botanical perspective, Timothy clover features upright stems reaching heights between 20 and 50 centimeters. The leaves are trifoliate, typical for the clover genus. The most striking feature is its dense, cylindrical flower head, which develops a vertical orientation and a textural appearance that contrasts with the more common globe-shaped clover inflorescences.
