Rough clover

Rough clover, scientifically known as Trifolium scabrum, is an annual legume species belonging to the Fabaceae family. Its common name is derived from the stiff, bristly hairs that cover the stems and leaves, giving the plant a rough texture upon touch. It is a hardy, low-growing plant typically found in dry and disturbed environments.

The native distribution of this plant includes the Mediterranean region, extending into Western Asia and North Africa. It thrives in various habitats such as dry sandy soils, gravelly hillsides, and coastal areas. Its ability to tolerate dry conditions makes it a significant component of semi-arid grassland ecosystems.

Botanically, the plant features decumbent or ascending stems that rarely exceed 30 cm in length. The leaves are trifoliate with prominent veins and serrated margins. The inflorescences are dense, sessile flower heads located in the leaf axils. The flowers are small and whitish-pink, with calyxes that become rigid and prickly after flowering, aiding in seed dispersal.

In terms of agricultural requirements, the plant is not demanding regarding soil fertility. It prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soils and requires full sun exposure. While not typically grown as a primary monoculture crop, its drought resistance makes it a valuable species for improving poor-quality pastures in arid regions where more productive legumes fail to establish.
