Knotted clover (lat. Trifolium striatum L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is recognized in agricultural science as a significant forage legume that contributes to pasture quality and soil health by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, thereby enhancing the fertility of the plots where it grows.
The species is native to the Mediterranean region and is widespread across Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It typically inhabits open grasslands, sandy soils, and dry slopes. In agricultural practice, it is valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive in environments where other high-yield legumes might struggle.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its pubescent (hairy) stems that can grow up to 30 cm in length. It features trifoliate leaves and small, pinkish-white flower heads. The common name refers to its distinct, ribbed (knotted) calyces that appear as the seeds mature, making it easily distinguishable from other clover species.
Regarding cultivation requirements, knotted clover prefers well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soils. It is notably drought-tolerant, which makes it an ideal candidate for dryland farming or as part of a drought-resistant pasture mix. Proper soil aeration is critical, as it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
The primary use of this crop is for livestock grazing and as a component in meadow improvement programs. Despite its benefits, farmers should be aware of potential issues such as infestation by weevils or aphids, as well as fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Maintaining a balanced grazing rotation helps minimize these risks and ensures sustained productivity.
