Velenovsky's Clover

Velenovsky's Clover (Trifolium velenovskyi) is a distinctive member of the Fabaceae family. As a wild-growing forage-type legume, it is recognized for its adaptation to specific mountain habitats, making it a subject of interest for both conservationists and researchers looking for hardy germplasm.

The plant originates from the Balkan Peninsula, predominantly found in the mountainous regions of Bulgaria. Its natural habitat consists of rocky, well-drained alpine meadows, where it has developed the ability to thrive under harsh climatic conditions, including strong winds and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its compact growth habit and trifoliate leaves, which often feature fine pubescence to mitigate water loss. Given its alpine origin, it prefers open spaces with full sun exposure and generally shows a strong resistance to common pests and diseases that plague more intensive forage crops.
