Despite its name "soft," the leaves are quite rigid and sharp, yet they are generally considered less abrasive than those of other hard spinifex species, which is why it earned its common name.
The native habitat of Triodia pungens spans vast desert and savanna regions of the Australian continent. It thrives in environments where water is scarce and temperatures are extremely high. The plant is typically found on sandy plains, stony rises, and areas with poor soil quality, where it often forms dense, extensive hummocks that dominate the local landscape.
