Water forget-me-not

Water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. It is a moisture-loving species that thrives in aquatic or semi-aquatic environments, making it a popular choice for pond margins and bog gardens where soil moisture is consistently high.

The plant is native to Europe and parts of North America and Asia, where it naturally inhabits stream banks, marshes, and wet meadows. Because of its vigorous growth habit, it has been widely adopted in landscaping as an effective groundcover that can handle periodic flooding, distinguishing it from dry-land varieties of the genus.

Botanically, the plant features creeping rhizomes that allow it to spread horizontally, forming dense mats of foliage. The stems are typically branched and grow up to 30–40 cm in height. The flowers, which are renowned for their striking blue hue and yellow center, bloom in coiled cymes (scorpioid inflorescences) from late spring until the first frosts.

Cultivation requirements are centered around water availability. The species prefers damp, rich, loamy soils and can even be grown in shallow water, provided the crown is not completely submerged for long durations. While it prefers full sun for optimal flowering, it can tolerate partial shade, which is beneficial in hotter climates to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.

Maintenance involves periodic division to control spread and remove any dead or overgrown stems. The plant is generally robust, but gardeners should monitor for common issues such as powdery mildew in poorly ventilated, overly dry sites, or aphid infestations. Routine management ensures a healthy, dense carpet of blue flowers throughout the growing season.
