The two-flowered tulip (Tulipa biflora) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Liliaceae family. It is recognized as an early-spring ephemeral, meaning it completes its vegetative growth cycle rapidly during the favorable moisture window in the spring, allowing the plant to remain dormant during the hot, dry summer months.

This species is native to a broad geographical range, spanning from Southeastern Europe and the Caucasus to Central Asia and Western China. It is commonly found in arid habitats, including rocky slopes, gravelly steppes, and semi-deserts, where it thrives in well-drained soils that heat up quickly when the frost retreats.

Botanically, Tulipa biflora produces small bulbs covered in dark tunics. The stem reaches a modest height, typically ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters. A key identifying trait is its multiflorous nature, where a single bulb can produce several smaller flowers per stalk. The perianth segments are typically white or yellowish, often featuring a distinct greenish or purplish stripe on the exterior.

Agronomic requirements are centered on replicating the plant's natural habitat. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable; heavy soils prone to waterlogging will lead to bulb rot. The species prefers alkaline or neutral, mineral-rich substrates. Planting should occur in the autumn, ensuring that the bulbs are placed deep enough to protect them from extreme soil temperature fluctuations during the winter months.

The primary economic and horticultural application for this species is in rock gardening and specialized botanical displays. Cultivation can be challenged by various pathogens and pests, particularly in non-optimal climates. Susceptibility to fungal diseases like Fusarium rot and Botrytis is high if soil drainage is inadequate. Protective measures include dusting bulbs with fungicides before planting and maintaining a strict dry dormant period during summer to prevent pest colonization by root mites or bulb flies.
