Orphan's tulip

Orphan's tulip (Tulipa orphanidea) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Liliaceae family. Classified as a botanical tulip, this species is highly regarded by horticulturalists for its delicate appearance, resilience, and unique coppery-orange to reddish-brown coloration that distinguishes it from common garden hybrids.

The native distribution area of Tulipa orphanidea covers parts of Southeastern Europe, primarily Greece and Western Turkey. Historically adapted to rocky mountainous terrain and well-drained slopes, the plant has evolved to thrive in environments with significant temperature fluctuations and seasonal moisture patterns, making it remarkably hardy in garden settings.

Botanically, this tulip is characterized by a compact growth habit, typically reaching heights of 15 to 25 centimeters. Its foliage is slender, often glaucous, and the flowers often feature distinct dark basal markings inside the cup. The plant initiates growth in early spring, utilizing stored energy to produce long-lasting, star-shaped blossoms that open fully in the sunlight.

For optimal growth, Tulipa orphanidea requires well-draining soil and a sunny position. The species is sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to bulb decay; therefore, improving soil drainage with organic matter or grit is highly recommended. Unlike many commercial varieties, it benefits from remaining undisturbed in the soil for several years, provided the soil remains dry during the dormant summer phase.

While generally robust, gardeners should watch for signs of fungal issues like basal rot, often triggered by excessive summer rain or poor drainage.
