Ostrowsky tulip

The Ostrowsky tulip (Tulipa ostrowskiana) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Liliaceae family. It is native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, specifically the Tien Shan range. This species is highly valued by botanists and specialized gardeners for its unique appearance and adaptation to harsh highland environments.

The natural habitat of this tulip consists of dry, rocky slopes and foothill valleys where it thrives during the brief spring season. As an ephemeral, it completes its life cycle rapidly before the onset of the summer drought. In an agricultural context, it is considered a specialty crop requiring precise environmental mimicking to succeed in cultivation.

Botanically, Tulipa ostrowskiana features solitary, brilliant red flowers, often with a dark basal blotch surrounded by a yellow ring. The stems grow up to 15–30 cm tall, accompanied by glaucous, often wavy-edged leaves. The bulbs are encased in leathery tunics, providing necessary protection against thermal stress and dehydration during the dormancy phase.

Cultivation requires loose, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The most critical factor in its maintenance is the strict management of water: the soil must be kept relatively dry during the summer dormancy period to prevent bulb rot. Adequate sun exposure is essential for the development of robust, flowering specimens.

• Avoidance of fertilizer application during the dormancy stage.
• Careful monitoring of soil moisture levels throughout the year.

Common threats to the crop include fungal diseases like Botrytis or fusarium wilt, as well as bulb-boring pests. Success is largely dependent on the quality of the soil aeration and the initial health of the bulbs.
