Description
Tylecodon pearsonii is a unique succulent shrub belonging to the Crassulaceae family. The plant is renowned for its unusual caudex structure, which forms bizarre, often twisted stems, making it highly sought after by collectors of exotic botanical specimens.
This species is native to South Africa, specifically the arid regions of Namaqualand. In its natural habitat, its distribution is restricted to rocky slopes, where the plant has adapted to extreme temperature fluctuations and water scarcity by developing efficient water-storage mechanisms in its tissues.
Botanically, the crop is characterized by slow growth and a deciduous cycle. Leaves emerge during the cooler part of the year when the plant is actively growing, and as the summer heat approaches, they fall off, allowing the succulent to enter a state of deep dormancy. The surface of the stems is often covered with a characteristic peeling bark.
Cultivation requires strict adherence to watering regimes: soil moisture is allowed only during the active growing season, provided that drainage is excellent. The soil must be loose, consisting of coarse sand, gravel, and minimal organic matter to prevent waterlogging and subsequent rot of the caudex.
