Grey elm

The Grey elm (Ulmus canescens) is a deciduous tree species belonging to the Ulmaceae family. Within agricultural and forestry sectors, this tree is valued for its remarkable resilience and ability to thrive in harsh environments, making it a reliable candidate for shelterbelts and land rehabilitation projects in arid climates.

The species is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of the Middle East. It has evolved to survive in temperate and semi-arid zones, developing physiological adaptations that allow it to cope with high solar radiation and low annual precipitation levels compared to other elm species.

Botanically, Ulmus canescens is easily identified by the grayish, downy pubescence covering its young twigs and the undersides of its leaves. The leaf structure is typically serrated and asymmetrical at the base, which is a classic feature of the Ulmus genus. The tree maintains a moderate growth rate and develops a dense, shade-providing canopy.

Cultivation requirements favor well-drained soils, although the species displays an impressive tolerance for calcareous and saline soils. Successful establishment requires clear-site preparation and minimal competition from weeds during the first three years. Once established, the tree demonstrates high levels of drought tolerance and requires little supplemental irrigation.
