Sea squill (Latin: Urginea maritima) is a perennial bulbous plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Renowned for its large, partially exposed bulbs that can reach significant sizes, it is a key species in Mediterranean ecosystems. The plant is historically significant due to its dual use as both a medicinal crop and a traditional rodenticide.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin, where it thrives in coastal, rocky, and sandy environments. Its natural habitat includes diverse regions across Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Due to its evolutionary adaptation to arid climates, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and capable of surviving in nutrient-poor soils where other crops would fail.
Botanically, the species is defined by its distinct seasonal cycle. Long, strap-like leaves emerge in the autumn and persist through winter, providing the bulb with energy. By late summer, a tall, sturdy flowering spike emerges, bearing a long raceme of small white or pinkish flowers. This developmental timing ensures the plant maximizes water availability during the cool season while resting during the harsh summer heat.
Cultivation requirements for sea squill focus primarily on soil drainage and site selection. It performs best in loose, sandy-loam soils with excellent drainage, as excessive moisture often leads to bulb rot, the most critical risk in its agrotechnology. The plant requires full sun to thrive. Propagation is usually achieved through the separation of offset bulbs, which should be planted during the dormancy period to ensure proper root establishment.
In terms of agricultural and industrial utility, sea squill is primarily harvested for its bulbs, which are rich in cardiac glycosides like scillaren A and B. These compounds are extracted for pharmaceutical use in treating cardiovascular conditions. While no longer the primary choice for pest control, it remains a subject of botanical interest and small-scale cultivation for specialized medicinal supply chains. Typical pests include bulb mites and common bulb flies.
