Small nettle (Urtica urens L.), also known as the annual nettle, is a herbaceous flowering plant in the Urticaceae family. Unlike its perennial counterpart, the stinging nettle, this species completes its life cycle in a single season. It is well-known for its potent stinging hairs which contain a complex mixture of formic acid, histamine, and other chemicals that cause immediate irritation upon contact.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, the small nettle has achieved a global distribution, adapting to various temperate climates. It is frequently categorized as an opportunistic species or weed, commonly found in cultivated fields, gardens, roadsides, and waste areas where nitrogen-rich soil is available, indicating high soil fertility.
