The plant originates from North America, where it thrives in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies such as swamps, ponds, and acidic ditches. Its natural range reflects an adaptation to nutrient-poor environments, where the ability to capture insects provides the essential nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that are unavailable in the substrate or water column.

Botanically, Utricularia radiata is easily identified by its characteristic radial whorl of inflated, air-filled floats. These structures ensure the plant remains buoyant at the water's surface.
