Hairy blueberry

Hairy blueberry (Vaccinium hirsutum) is a perennial shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. It is a distinct species within the Vaccinium genus, easily identified by the dense, soft hairs that cover its leaves, stems, and fruits, which differentiates it from the common highbush or lowbush blueberry varieties found in commercial orchards.

The native habitat of Vaccinium hirsutum is restricted to the southeastern United States, primarily within mountainous regions. It thrives in temperate climates and is highly adapted to acidic, nutrient-poor soil conditions. While it is not widely used for large-scale industrial agriculture, it remains a valuable genetic resource for researchers and a prized plant for specialty horticultural collections.

Botanically, the shrub typically grows to a height of about one meter. Its foliage is characterized by ovate leaves that feel fuzzy to the touch. The fruits are dark blue to black, typically covered in a glaucous bloom and fine hair. Despite the unconventional appearance of the berries, they possess a pleasant, sweet-tart flavor profile typical of wild Vaccinium species.

Successful cultivation of the hairy blueberry requires mimicking its natural habitat. The most critical factor is soil acidity, which must be maintained between pH 4.5 and 5.5. The soil must be rich in organic matter and possess an exceptional drainage capacity to prevent root rot. Supplemental irrigation is necessary during dry spells, as the plant does not tolerate prolonged drought.
