Formerly classified under the genus Acacia, this resilient plant is widely recognized for its ability to thrive in extremely arid environments, playing a vital ecological role in the drylands of Southern Africa.

The plant originates from the arid savanna and desert regions of Botswana, Namibia, and the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is characteristically found in sandy plains and stabilized dunes, where it endures long periods of drought, demonstrating exceptional adaptation strategies to survive with minimal water resources.

Botanically, it is characterized by its distinct dark, almost greyish-black bark and feathery foliage that reduces water loss. The tree grows slowly, often reaching a moderate height, and features sharp stipular spines.
