Valonia oak (Quercus ithaburensis subsp. macrolepis) is a member of the Fagaceae family, historically significant for its high content of tannins found in its large, scale-covered acorn cups. In agricultural and forestry sectors, this species is cultivated primarily for its raw materials used in the leather tanning industry and its robust ability to survive in Mediterranean environments.
The native range of this tree spans across the Eastern Mediterranean, including parts of Greece, the Balkans, and Turkey. It thrives in regions characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. When cultivated outside its natural range, it requires sites that are protected from severe frost, as excessive cold can permanently damage the foliage and cambium of young specimens.
Botanically, this oak is a medium-to-large tree with a broad, spreading canopy. Its defining feature is the massive acorn cup, known in commerce as "valonia," which is heavily loaded with tannins. The tree's root system is deep and expansive, an evolutionary adaptation that allows it to access groundwater in rocky, limestone-rich soils where other species might struggle.
Regarding soil and agro-technology, the Valonia oak prefers well-drained, alkaline or neutral soils. It is highly drought-tolerant once established but requires moderate irrigation during the first three to five years of growth. Planting is usually done in early spring or autumn. Thinning out competing vegetation in the vicinity of young saplings is essential to ensure adequate light and nutrient uptake.
Economic use is primarily focused on the collection of acorn cups for the extraction of tannins, although the wood is also harvested for high-quality furniture and construction. The most common pests include various leaf-rolling insects and the oak phylloxera. Pathogens such as Oidium (powdery mildew) can be problematic, necessitating a disciplined approach to orchard hygiene and monitoring.
