It functions as a climber, utilizing structural support from other vegetation to reach light in dense forest environments.
The plant originates from the tropical rainforests of Central America. Its native habitat is characterized by high humidity, moderate light, and consistent temperatures. Vanilla periculosa has evolved to effectively utilize aerial roots to harvest moisture and nutrients directly from the humid forest atmosphere, making it highly sensitive to changes in its microenvironment.
Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its succulent, climbing stems and coriaceous, elliptical leaves.
