Dense-flowered mullein

Dense-flowered mullein (lat. Verbascum densiflorum Bertol.) is a biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. It is characterized by a sturdy, densely hairy stem that can reach heights of 2 meters. During the first year, it develops a rosette of large, felt-like leaves, and in the second year, it produces a spectacular, tall spike of yellow flowers that serves as the primary harvested product.

The plant is native to Europe and Western Asia, typically found in sunny, open habitats like woodland edges, slopes, and fallow fields. For agricultural cultivation, it requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil that is not prone to waterlogging. It is a highly drought-tolerant species that thrives in full sunlight, making it an excellent candidate for low-maintenance field crops.

Cultivation practices involve sowing seeds in early spring or autumn. Since the seeds are extremely small, they should be lightly covered with soil. During the vegetative stage, it is crucial to ensure the plants have sufficient space to develop their large leaf rosettes. Minimal fertilization is usually sufficient, as the plant is adapted to survive in relatively poor soil conditions, provided the drainage is adequate.

The main commercial use of Verbascum densiflorum is in the pharmaceutical industry. The flowers are harvested daily during the blooming season. The dried blossoms contain high levels of saponins, flavonoids, and mucilage, which are highly valued for their expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties in modern herbal medicine.

Maintaining a weed-free field during the early stages of establishment ensures better plant vigor and ultimately higher yields of medicinal raw materials at the end of the second growing season.
