Wall speedwell

Wall speedwell (Veronica arvensis L.) is a small annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a common field weed that infests cereal crops, forage lands, orchards, and vineyards, significantly competing with cultivated plants for essential nutrients and sunlight during the early growth stages.

Originating from Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, this species has successfully naturalized in many parts of North America and other temperate regions worldwide. Its rapid life cycle and ability to thrive in diverse soil types, ranging from sandy loam to heavy clay, make it a persistent challenge for farmers in various climatic zones.

Botanically, Wall speedwell is characterized by a low-growing, often branched stem that reaches approximately 5–25 cm in height. The foliage is pubescent, with lower leaves being petiolate and heart-shaped, while upper leaves are sessile and lanceolate. The plant produces small, bright blue-to-violet flowers arranged in terminal racemes, and it reproduces exclusively through seeds, which can remain viable in the soil seed bank for several years.

Effective agronomic management of Veronica arvensis relies on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Crop rotation, maintaining optimal plant density to shade out the weed, and proper soil cultivation are essential preventative measures.
