New Zealand Lilac

Veronica hulkeana, commonly known as the New Zealand Lilac or Hebe hulkeana, is an ornamental evergreen subshrub belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. It is widely admired for its sprays of delicate, lavender-colored flowers that create a soft, cloud-like appearance.

Native to the South Island of New Zealand, this plant typically thrives in rocky outcrops and sheltered slopes. Because of its specific habitat requirements, it is highly valued by enthusiasts who maintain rock gardens, alpine displays, or well-drained container gardens in mild temperate climates.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its woody base and glossy, toothed leaves that remain evergreen throughout the year. Successful cultivation requires soil that is extremely well-draining, mimicking its natural stony environment. The plant does not tolerate waterlogged soil, which often leads to root rot.
