The species is indigenous to the western United States, specifically California and Oregon. It predominantly inhabits forest understories and brushy slopes, where it benefits from the shelter of larger trees and the presence of fertile, well-drained soil typical of these mountainous or foothill regions.

Botanically, the shrub typically reaches a height of one to three meters. Its leaves are leathery, broadly elliptic to ovate, and often feature serrated margins.
