Prague viburnum

Prague viburnum (Viburnum pragense) is a distinctive evergreen shrub belonging to the Adoxaceae family. This hybrid variety was developed in Prague in 1955, resulting from a cross between Viburnum rhytidophyllum and Viburnum utile. It is highly regarded by landscape architects for its dense foliage, vigorous growth, and hardiness, making it a staple in temperate climate gardens.

As a cultivated hybrid, it does not have a native range in the wild. Its cultivation is primarily concentrated in ornamental gardens, public parks, and nursery production across Europe and North America. Due to its evergreen nature, it is frequently chosen for year-round screening and structural planting, providing texture and color in the garden even during winter months.

Botanically, it forms a large, upright shrub reaching heights of 2–3 meters. The leaves are leathery, glossy dark green on the top, and feature a distinct wrinkled surface with a lighter, felt-like underside. In late spring, the plant produces clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers. These blooms are followed by small red fruits that gradually darken to black, serving as a food source for local bird populations.

The agrotechnical requirements for this shrub focus on fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. While it tolerates various soil types, it performs best in locations that provide protection from drying winds, which can damage the evergreen foliage. Supplemental irrigation is necessary during dry spells to ensure consistent growth and to prevent stress that might lead to leaf drop or susceptibility to pests.
