Japanese vetch (scientific name: Vicia japonica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). This crop is highly valued for its nutrient density and its capacity to act as a nitrogen-fixing plant, which makes it an excellent candidate for sustainable farming systems in temperate climates.
The native range of this species extends across East Asia, including the Russian Far East, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. It thrives in diverse environments, showing remarkable hardiness against cold winters and moderate summer temperatures. Its ability to adapt to regional microclimates allows it to flourish in areas with variable annual rainfall.
Botanically, Japanese vetch is defined by its climbing stems, which can reach over one meter in length, and its complex compound leaves equipped with tendrils.
