Spring vetch

Spring vetch (Vicia lathyroides) is an annual herbaceous plant that belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is a compact species characterized by its adaptability and ability to thrive in nutrient-poor conditions, making it an interesting subject for agricultural and ecological research.

The natural range of this plant covers most parts of Europe, the Caucasus, and parts of Asia. It typically prefers sandy, dry habitats, open fields, and rocky slopes. It has evolved to survive in temperate climates with fluctuating rainfall, demonstrating significant physiological plasticity.

From a botanical perspective, the plant has a taproot system and a branched stem that usually grows to a height of 5 to 20 cm. Its leaves are pinnate, ending in a small point or tendril. The flowers are typically purple or reddish-violet, typical of the Vicia genus. After pollination, the plant produces small pods containing brownish seeds.

Agricultural requirements for this crop focus on well-drained soils and adequate sunlight. It does not require intensive nitrogen fertilization, as it forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its root nodules. Proper weed management during the seedling stage is critical to ensure competitive development of the crop.

The primary economic use of this plant is in the forage industry, where it provides a nutritious biomass for livestock. Due to its high protein content, it serves as a supplement in animal feeding.
