Unlike total parasites, this plant maintains its ability to synthesize energy through photosynthesis while drawing essential water and dissolved minerals from its host tree via specialized root-like structures known as haustoria. This unique adaptation allows it to thrive in the canopy layer, well above the forest floor.
The native range of this species covers regions across Eastern Asia, including the Russian Far East, China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. It is typically found in temperate deciduous forests where host trees like oaks, maples, and lindens are abundant. The plant's survival is highly dependent on the stability of these host tree populations, as the climate must provide enough humidity for successful germination of mistletoe seeds on host branches.
Botanically, Viscum coloratum is characterized by its dichotomous branching and leathery, lanceolate leaves. The most defining feature that gives the species its name is the color of its ripening berries, which shift to a vibrant yellow or reddish-orange hue. These fruits persist through the winter, serving as a vital food source for avian species, which play a critical role in the plant's reproductive cycle by dispersing its seeds.
