This hybrid is widely recognized in viticulture as a foundational parentage for many high-performance grapevine rootstocks. It was developed to combine the inherent resistance to phylloxera found in American vines with the critical ability to thrive in soil environments that are otherwise toxic to many standard grape varieties.

The origin of this hybrid dates back to the late 19th century when European viticulture faced total devastation due to the phylloxera aphid. Breeders crossed Vitis rupestris, prized for its vigorous root development and drought tolerance, with Vitis berlandieri, which possesses a unique physiological adaptation to high-calcium (limestone) soils. The result was a robust plant that paved the way for the restoration of vineyards in Mediterranean and other calcareous regions.

Botanically, this plant is characterized by a vigorous, deep-rooting system and strong, well-ripening canes. Its leaves typically display morphological traits inherited from both parent species, providing a high leaf surface area that aids in carbon accumulation. The anatomical structure of the roots is specialized to withstand high pH levels, effectively preventing the iron chlorosis that frequently affects sensitive varieties when planted in chalky soils.

Agronomic requirements for this culture focus on the precision of the grafting process, as successful union development is essential for long-term vineyard productivity.
