These species, belonging to the Vitaceae family, were selected by viticulturists to solve the crisis caused by the phylloxera aphid. This specific combination is primarily used as a rootstock to support the growth of Vitis vinifera vines in hostile soil conditions.

The origin of these hybrids dates back to late 19th-century efforts to cross-breed resistant North American vines with European wine grapes. Their natural habitat is diverse, spanning from the riverbanks favored by V. riparia to the rocky, arid hillsides preferred by V. rupestris, making these hybrids highly adaptable to varied geographical regions across the globe.
