Coastal rosemary

Coastal rosemary (Westringia fruticosa) is an evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Despite its common name, it is botanically distinct from culinary rosemary, although its foliage shares a remarkably similar appearance and texture, making it a staple in Mediterranean-style gardens.

Native to the coastal regions of New South Wales, Australia, this shrub has evolved to survive in challenging environments. It thrives on rocky cliffs and coastal dunes, displaying exceptional tolerance to high salinity, salt spray, and strong coastal winds, which makes it an excellent choice for seaside landscaping.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a compact, bushy habit reaching up to two meters in height. The leaves are small, lanceolate, and arranged in whorls of four, often displaying a soft grey-green color due to fine hairs. The small white or pale mauve flowers bloom almost continuously, featuring distinctive orange or brown spots in the throat of each bloom.

Agronomic requirements center on well-drained soil and high sun exposure. It is highly drought-tolerant once established but requires consistent irrigation during its initial growth phase. The soil should ideally be slightly alkaline and sandy; heavy, waterlogged clay soils can lead to root rot, which is the most common issue for this species in non-native environments.

In terms of agricultural and horticultural use, coastal rosemary is highly valued for its versatility in landscaping. It serves as an excellent hedge plant, windbreak, or topiary specimen due to its ability to withstand regular pruning. It is also suitable for container gardening in cooler zones where it must be moved indoors to protected locations during winter months.
