Widdringtonia whytei, commonly known as the Mulanje cedar, is a large evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the Cupressaceae family. It is a critically endangered species native to the high altitudes of the Mulanje Massif in Malawi, recognized as the tallest indigenous conifer in the region.
The tree thrives in cool, montane climates characterized by high rainfall and frequent mountain mists. Its natural habitat is restricted to sheltered gullies and steep slopes, which provide the necessary conditions for its slow but steady development. The plant is perfectly adapted to the specific soil chemistry found in these high-elevation ecosystems.
