Wikstroemia ganpi is a perennial shrub belonging to the Thymelaeaceae family. It is a specialized crop valued primarily for the high-quality fibers extracted from its bark, which serve as a foundational material in the production of traditional Japanese paper, known as washi.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of East Asia, specifically within Japan. It thrives in humid, temperate environments and is typically found in shaded or semi-shaded forest margins. Due to its specific climate requirements, large-scale cultivation is restricted to zones where frost is minimal and air humidity remains consistently high.

Botanically, Wikstroemia ganpi displays flexible, slender branches and simple, lanceolate leaves. Its growth rate is relatively slow compared to other fiber crops, but the quality of its internal bark fiber—which is exceptionally long, thin, and strong—is highly prized for producing paper with a smooth, durable, and lustrous finish.
