Historically classified within the Lemnaceae family, this plant is recognized as one of the simplest and smallest flowering plants. It consists of thin, flattened, strap-like fronds and lacks true roots, leaves, or stems, making it an evolutionary marvel of biological reduction.

The native habitat of Wolffiella floridana is concentrated in the wetlands, marshes, and slow-moving or stagnant freshwater bodies of North and Central America. The plant thrives in warm, temperate to tropical climates, forming dense mats on the water's surface.
