Wollemi pine

The Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis) is an extraordinary relic coniferous species belonging to the Araucariaceae family. Often referred to as a living fossil, its discovery in a remote gorge in Australia in 1994 provided a glimpse into the prehistoric flora of the planet. Despite its common name, it is not a true pine but a relative of the Norfolk Island pine and the monkey puzzle tree.

The natural habitat of the species is limited to protected temperate rainforests in New South Wales. For agricultural and ornamental purposes, it is currently cultivated in controlled environments globally. The plant thrives best in regions with mild maritime climates where it can experience steady moisture levels and protection from extreme temperature fluctuations.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its unique bubbly bark and its distinctive branching habit. The leaves are flat, waxy, and arranged in four ranks along the stems. Interestingly, the Wollemi pine produces both male and female cones on the same tree, which is a key reproductive trait for maintaining the health of this rare species in isolated plantings.

For successful cultivation, the soil must be well-drained and slightly acidic, mimicking the sandy loam of its native deep-valley habitat. Regular watering is essential, but avoiding waterlogged soil is critical to prevent root rot. It prefers bright, indirect light; harsh midday sun can easily scorch the needles, especially in young saplings or container-grown specimens.

The primary use of the Wollemi pine is in specialized horticulture and botanical conservation. It serves as a flagship species for ex-situ conservation programs aimed at preventing its extinction. Growers must be vigilant against Phytophthora cinnamomi, a soil-borne pathogen that poses a severe threat to the species, necessitating the use of sterile substrates and careful monitoring for any signs of decay.
