Woodwardia areolata, commonly known as the netted chain fern, is a perennial fern belonging to the Blechnaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its distinct structural beauty and its ability to thrive in wet, shaded environments where other common garden plants often struggle to survive.
The species is native to the eastern parts of North America. Its natural habitat includes swamps, wet forests, and the edges of ponds and streams. This geographic origin is a primary indicator of its ecological requirements, emphasizing the need for consistent moisture and a protected microclimate that mimics its forest floor environment.
Botanically, this fern displays significant dimorphism, meaning its sterile and fertile fronds look different.
