Woolly thyme

Woolly thyme (lat. Thymus pseudolanuginosus) is a perennial ground-covering plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is highly valued by gardeners and landscapers for its distinctive grey-green foliage covered in soft hairs, which gives the plant a woolly, carpet-like appearance.

Native to the mountainous regions of Southern Europe, this species is well-adapted to rocky and rugged terrains. In modern horticulture, it is cultivated primarily in temperate zones as a resilient ground cover that thrives in environments where other traditional turf grasses might struggle to survive.

Botanically, woolly thyme is characterized by its prostrate growth habit, reaching heights of only 5 to 10 centimeters. The tiny leaves are densely packed, and the plant produces clusters of pale pink or lilac flowers during the late spring and early summer. Its root system is shallow but efficient at anchoring the plant in gravelly or sandy substrates.

Agricultural requirements for this species center on excellent drainage and full sun exposure. It prefers lean, alkaline or neutral soils and cannot tolerate "wet feet," which makes it susceptible to root rot. When establishing a new planting, ensure that the soil is aerated and that the site receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily.

In terms of maintenance and pest management, woolly thyme is remarkably low-maintenance. Gardeners should follow these general guidelines:

• Provide minimal supplemental watering, only during prolonged droughts.
• Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a dense, compact habit.
• Monitor for potential issues such as root rot if the soil retains too much moisture.
• Avoid heavy fertilizing, as rich soil can lead to leggy, weak growth.
• Use in rock gardens, between pavers, or as a decorative border for sunny pathways.

This plant is naturally resistant to most common garden pests, though it can occasionally host aphids. By selecting a location with optimal air circulation and avoiding overhead watering, you can prevent most fungal issues, ensuring the plant remains healthy and aesthetic throughout the growing season.
