Spiny cocklebur (Latin: Xanthium spinosum L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Often classified as a noxious weed, it is recognized globally for its ability to invade agricultural lands, compete with crops for resources, and cause mechanical damage to livestock and harvesting machinery due to its sharp spines.
Originating from South America, spiny cocklebur has successfully spread across various continents, establishing itself as a resilient cosmopolitan species. It thrives in diverse environments, from disturbed soils and roadsides to pastures and agricultural fields, showing a particular preference for warm, dry climates and nitrogen-rich soil conditions.
The plant is distinguished by its branched, erect stem that can reach up to one meter in height. The leaves are typically narrow, dark green on the surface, and covered with fine, white, woolly hairs on the underside, which aids in drought adaptation.
