The Grass tree (Xanthorrhoea resinosa) is a distinctive perennial plant belonging to the Xanthorrhoeaceae family. It is characterized by its long, grass-like leaves growing from a sturdy, woody trunk that develops extremely slowly over many decades. This plant is a symbol of the Australian bush, exhibiting remarkable resilience in challenging environmental conditions, including nutrient-poor soils and high heat.
Native to the eastern regions of Australia, this species thrives in sandy, well-drained heathlands and open forests. Evolutionarily, the plant is fire-adapted; natural bushfires often trigger the development of its impressive, tall flower spike. This adaptation mechanism ensures that the plant can survive and even flourish in an environment frequently subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, the trunk of the grass tree is composed of a dense mass of dead leaf bases, bound together by a natural, resinous substance. The leaves themselves are narrow, tough, and rigid, arranged in a dense rosette at the crown of the trunk. The flower spike, or scape, can grow quite tall, carrying thousands of tiny, cream-colored flowers that are highly attractive to local nectar-feeding birds and insects.
