Poor Knight Lily

The Poor Knight Lily (Xeronema callistemon) is an extraordinary perennial herb belonging to the Xeronemataceae family. Often referred to by its common name, it is a highly specialized plant species recognized for its striking inflorescences that resemble a vibrant crimson bottlebrush.

Native to the Poor Knights Islands off the coast of New Zealand, this plant is naturally adapted to rugged, cliff-side environments. Its natural habitat is characterized by coastal breezes and shallow, rocky soils. These environmental origins make the plant particularly unique and challenging to maintain in non-native climates, as it requires specific ecological conditions.

Botanically, the species features sturdy, sword-shaped leaves arranged in a fan-like basal rosette. The inflorescence is the most remarkable feature, growing as a dense raceme of bright red flowers with long, protruding stamens.
