Xylocarpus granatum, commonly known as the cannonball mangrove or cedar mangrove, is a distinctive tree species belonging to the Meliaceae family. It is a vital component of tropical mangrove ecosystems, specifically evolved to thrive in intertidal saline environments where few other woody plants can survive.

The origin of this species traces back to the tropical coasts of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific. Its natural range extends from East Africa through South and Southeast Asia, reaching as far as Northern Australia. It typically inhabits the landward side of mangrove forests, where the frequency of tidal inundation is balanced by terrestrial nutrient input.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by its distinct plank-like buttress roots, which provide mechanical support in soft, waterlogged substrates. The bark is smooth and peels off in irregular patches. The fruits are large, woody, cannonball-shaped capsules that split open to release seeds adapted for hydrochory, or water-based dispersal, allowing the species to colonize distant coastal mudflats.

Cultivation requirements are strict, focusing on maintaining natural hydrology. The plant requires high humidity, warm tropical temperatures, and nutrient-rich, silty substrates. In reforestation projects, agrotechnical success depends on planting seedlings at precise elevations relative to the tidal cycle, ensuring that roots are neither completely submerged for too long nor left dry for extended periods.
