Hawaiian xylosma (lat. Xylosma hawaiiensis) is an evergreen tree or large shrub that belongs to the Salicaceae family. Known locally in Hawaii as 'maua', this plant is an iconic species of the Hawaiian flora. It has undergone several taxonomic changes, previously being placed in the Flacourtiaceae family before phylogenetic studies moved it to the willow family.
The origin of this species is strictly endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Its natural distribution is found in dry to mesic forests, spanning an elevation range from 300 to 1200 meters. The species thrives in areas with distinct seasonal rainfall patterns, making it highly resilient to varying degrees of humidity within its native habitat.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its glossy, leathery leaves with serrated margins. As a tree, it can reach heights of up to 10–12 meters. Its growth habit is often upright with a dense canopy. The small, yellowish-green flowers are inconspicuous, leading to the development of tiny, dark-colored berry-like drupes that are essential for local bird species.
Regarding agrotechnology and cultivation, Xylosma hawaiiensis requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. While it is hardy once established, young saplings require consistent moisture and protection from severe, desiccating winds. It is generally propagated through seeds, which should be cleaned of pulp and potentially scarified to ensure uniform germination rates.
