The evolutionary success of this species is tied to its ability to survive in nutrient-poor soils where competition with larger wetland vegetation is minimized.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a dense rosette of narrow, grass-like leaves that allow for gas exchange in waterlogged conditions.
