While not cultivated as a commercial agricultural crop, it serves as a critical biological component of specialized wetland ecosystems, attracting significant attention from botanists and conservationists.
The plant is native to the southeastern United States, with a highly restricted distribution range encompassing parts of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Arkansas. It is primarily found in distinct ecological niches, such as limestone seeps, wet meadows, and the edges of small, shallow wetlands, where the soil maintains specific moisture levels throughout the growing season.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a basal rosette of narrow, grass-like leaves and a long, rigid scape that supports a cone-like inflorescence at its apex. The flowers are notable for their bright yellow petals, although they are ephemeral, typically opening for only a short period during the day. The plant's structure is highly specialized for low-nutrient, high-moisture environments.
Cultivation requirements for this species are exceptionally stringent, necessitating high moisture levels and specific mineral-rich soils, particularly those with a neutral to alkaline pH derived from limestone geology. Due to these highly specific ecological needs, attempts to establish the species in commercial or conventional settings are generally discouraged and rarely successful.
There is no agricultural or industrial use for Xyris tennesseensis, as it is protected as a sensitive species due to its scarcity. Current efforts are focused entirely on habitat protection and restoration to prevent the further decline of wild populations. Major threats to the species include anthropogenic changes to hydrological regimes and the loss of suitable, undisturbed wetland habitats.
